Urban air mobility traffic management (often abbreviated UTM, or U-space in Europe) is the system of digital services that lets many low-altitude aircraft share the sky safely — without a human controller individually directing every flight. It is one of the least visible but most decisive technologies behind the eVTOL industry.
Why Conventional ATC Is Not Enough
Traditional air traffic control was built around a limited number of aircraft flying published routes between airports, with voice communication and human decision-making at its core. Air taxi networks envision thousands of short flights per day over a single metropolitan area. Scaling that safely requires automation: machine-to-machine data exchange, strategic deconfliction before take-off, and tactical separation in flight.
Building Blocks of UAM Airspace
Most national concepts of operations share common elements: network identification so every aircraft is electronically visible; flight authorisation services that approve intended trajectories; corridors or structured routes in the busiest airspace; dynamic geofencing around temporary hazards; and weather and conspicuity data services tailored to low-altitude urban flying. In the EU, the U-space regulatory package (Regulation (EU) 2021/664 and related rules) already defines mandatory services; in the US, the FAA’s UAM Concept of Operations describes cooperative corridors evolving toward higher autonomy.
What to Watch
